April Ross

April Ross is only one of the beach volleyball players to have won medals more than once at an Olympics. She is set to compete in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic medal with Alix Klineman who is a first-time Olympian. Ross is hoping to secure her Olympic the first medal of gold, however, she also hopes to earn more. It could be the last opportunity she gets at age 39. Nevertheless, she remains convinced of winning top awards. Ross stated via NBC Boston: "If we do our best and even playing well, I think we could win the gold medal." It's also going to be a matter of chance. Ross was born the 22nd, 1982 in Costa Mesa California. She resided there together with her parents. She went on to compete in numerous sports in Newport Harbor High School. Apart from indoor volleyball, she was a basketball player and also ran track as a pre-collegiate athlete. While she did well at indoor volleyball, it was clear that her skills were above average. In her own biography in high school, she played volleyball as an outside setter (middle blocker) and setter (outside blocker). The award was presented to her as one of the Gatorade National Circle of Champions player of the year in 1999, for her performance. Also, in 2000 she was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Ross is working with Klineman from 2017, but Ross's beach game had been established long before that. She actually won numerous major events in the past with two different partners. one of which is an icon of volleyball. For six years from 2007 until 2013, she was a team together with Jennifer Kessy who more recently served as her and Klineman's coach. Together with Kessy Ross, she won the World Championship in 2009 when she competed on the international circuit. The pair eventually picked up a silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Misty Maytreanor's legendary team along with Kerri Jennings won the gold. The fate of the matter was that Ross became Walsh Jennings' new partner as May-Treanor stepped down. They both went on to take home the bronze beach volleyball trophy at the Rio Olympics in 2016 along with Walsh Jennings. After high school and years before she hit the sand professionally, Ross played with the Trojans of USC as a collegiate. This was an impressive run for Ross at the university. As a freshmen in 2000, her play earned her the Pac-10 and NCAA Young Player of the Year awards. Her Trojans also reached the Final Four. She endured a great personal defeat in her sophomore year however, she was successful in achieving the All-American award. Over the course of her final two seasons she led the Trojans up the mountain and clinched consecutive national championships. She had established her place as a legend by winning the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the highest ranked female volleyball player. Ross majored at USC in International Relations. Unfortunately Ross mom Margie never got to see Ross rise to the very top of beach volleyball stardom. Ross's mother died of breast carcinoma in the year 2001. Ross had just become an undergraduate student in the second year at USC. Ross holds her mother very dearly. Margie is a source of inspiration, both off and on of the shore.
